India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Smog Following Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" level.
Record-Breaking Pollution Readings
Several parts of the capital showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals ten times the recommended level recommended by the WHO.
In some locations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1,800, equating to 15-20x above safe standards.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous haze that blankets the capital as the cold season begins.
However in recent months, the newly elected regional government approached the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Court Decision and Enforcement
Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, the court complied with the proposal, specifying that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital showed contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous measurements observed during the festival in at least recent memory.
International Implications
Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also initiated a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from across the border following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have remained as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.
Around celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particles in the air has been documented to spike to 70% higher the peak readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Diverse Contamination Factors
This crisis in the capital is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air sets in.
Public Health and Economic Toll
Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to numerous investigations.
This pollution leads to high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 premature mortalities each year in the capital.
