Space Traveler Reveals Depression After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
