The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
