Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, especially following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved no match against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
